Anglo-Boere Oorlog Museum

Although it all happened almost a Century ago, the Anglo-Boer War still evokes images, memories and emotions within the collective consciousness of the people and famous battle sites such as Colenso, Magersfontein and Paardeberg, are visited by thousands of people each year. Books about the War continue to pour regularly off publishing presses.

The War Museum in Bloemfontein does not only give the visitor insight into the Boer War through its unique art collection, dioramas and exhibits but also brings the visitor closer to understanding the background against which this War took place. The course and development of the war unfolds in front of the visitor as you progress through the museum. You are also afforded photos that give you a glimpse into the life in the concentration and prisoner-of-war camps, not only in South Africa, but also in Bermuda, India and Portugal.

The staff have gone to great lengths to ensure that the War is properly and accurately portrayed both in the Museum as well as outside on the Museum grounds, with hundred of priceless antiques and artefacts from the war, paintings depicting scenes from the war, bronze sculptures from some of the most significant figures in the war, and outstanding statues and buildings illustrating key phases in the War.

The Museum is immensely proud of this historical landmark in South Africa and urge everyone who wants to understand this huge part of South African history, to spend a couple of hours paying them a visit.
