Wildlife Haven on the Edge of the City

The Free State National Botanical Garden is one of nine gardens managed by the South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI). The Garden can be found in the capital city of the Free State, Bloemfontein, and approximately 130 km from Kimberley.

The Garden is 70 hectares in size and home to over 400 plant species, 124 bird species, 54 reptile species and 50 mammal species. It is best in Spring when most of its flowers are in vivid bloom, but there is always something of interest, even in mid-winter when the koppies are splashed with warm reds and bright yellows! Sunset concerts and moonlight walks are held during the summer months and the Botanical Society arrange periodic talks throughout the year.

The Free State Botanical Garden lies in a valley dotted with dolerite koppies, tall grassland and woodlands. It exhibits some magnificent examples of wild olive and karee trees, an orange blossom arbour and a petrified tree, thought to be over 150 million years’ old.  Wander along the meandering pathways, perfect for wheelchairs and the elderly, and experience the uniqueness of the Succulent Garden and the Garden of Hope and be intrigued by the fascinating Medicinal Garden.

Visitors can take a guided tour or go it alone on one of the walking trails, can choose to pack a picnic basket or enjoy a scrumptious lunch at the Gardens Restaurant, either way a day out in this beautiful garden is the ideal location to relax and reconnect with nature.
