Boland Mountain Complex, Wes-Kaap
The Boland Mountain Complex is one of the 8 protected areas of the Cape Floral Region/Kingdom of the Western Cape which is in turn one of the 8 UNESCO World Heritage Sites in South Africa. The Complex is situated in Western Cape Province close to Cape Town and has the Berg and Breede Rivers running through it.The complex has been called an area of outstanding natural beauty with rugged mountains steeped in history and the catchment area comprises only 9% of the Western Cape land and yet it provides 60% of its water.
The Boland Mountain Complex is a composite site and is made up of 5 nature reserves;
- Kogelberg Nature Reserve
- Jonkershoek Nature Reserve
- Assegaaibosch Nature Reserve
- Hottentots-Holland Nature Reserve
- Limietberg (Hawequas) Nature Reserve
The 5 areas that form the Boland Mountain Complex is administered by the Western Cape Nature Conservation Board under the direction of the Ministry of Environmental, Cultural Affairs and Sport.
