Western Cape’s Rugged Coastline
The beautiful seaside village of Franskraal is situated right on the edge of the Gansbaai area where it hugs the neighbouring coastal town of Kleinbaai at its western end. These popular holiday towns form part of the Western Cape's rugged coastline!
Franskraal offers long sandy, pristine beaches, excellent fishing, birding and the area surrounding this quaint and unpretentious little town is basically the shark cage diving capital of South Africa. There is a wide array of outdoor excursions for visitors who want to explore the stunning countryside - just next to the entrance of Franskraal is the Groot Melkhoutbos Trail, a hiking trail open to the public which winds through a small milkwood dominated forest.
Other activities include plenty of arts and crafts and the Strandveld Museum offers a fascinating insight into the history of the area and is home to the largest collection of relics from the Birkenhead that wrecked at Danger Point in 1852.

History
The town of Franskraal dates to the post war period, it became part of he Fairfield Farm in 1881, stretching from the sea at Gansbaai to near Napier. Originally it was part of the farm Franschekraal and the whole area was owned by the Byl family.
In the 1930’s businessmen from Johannesburg formed a syndicate, lead by Mr Scharsberg, and bought the sea facing portion of Franschekraal. About 2000 hectares were bought for development purposes and included the camping grounds of Uilkraalsmond. Franskraal was also known as Frikkiesbaai, after Frederick Andrews who worked in the guano trade at Dyers Island. Sampson Dyer, the man associated with starting the guano industry on Dyers Island, had a shack at Franskraal in 1806. Sampson Dyer came to the Cape as an emancipated slave from America and is considered to be the founder of the guano trade on Dyers Island.
