skoonheid jy sal nooit vergeet nie

Mikes Pass is a 4X4 only, high altitude Pass in the Drakensberg Mountain Range close to the small towns of Bergville and Winterton. The Pass is well signposted from both towns however, since 2014 the Pass is no longer open to the public. Today visitors can book a tour on a Reserve Vehicle to experience the Pass – booking are made directly with Didima Camp.

Distance 9.7 km
Gradient average 1:16
Gradient maximum 1:6
Summit 1931m
Surface Gravel

The booked Reserve drive is not expensive, and it comes complete with a Guide, and it saves the Pass from undue traffic. It’s also not a difficult drive, but the road is dangerous when wet and it is also very popular with mountain bikers who can use the road with a permit, also purchased from the Camp.

From Didima Camp, Cathedral Peak, Mikes Pass heads up the sandstone ridges of the Drakensberg leading up to a view point of the main Drakensberg escarpment. At the top the view point offers some unbelievable views of Cathedral Peak, Cathkin Peak and the Inner and Outer Horns and a bonus is getting to experience the mountain top fresh air! The Pass is famous for its altitude and heavenly views across Cathedral Peak Valley and Mlambona River.

Mikes Pass was designed and built by the Italian road engineer, GR Monzali, but named after Mr Mike de Villiers. Mr de Villiers was commissioned by the government to work out whether the cause of rivers running dry was attributable to exotic trees planted in the mountains. He therefore played a crucial role in its commissioning to access part of the little Berg for this ecological research.

After the drive, visit the Didima Rock Art Centre for an introduction to the rock art found in the caves and shelters of the Drakensberg. Research suggests that the Didima Valley was possibly one of the last places in the country where Mountain Bushmen lived.
