Retail Therapy in the Heart of the City of Gold

Just west of Johannesburg’s city centre is the charming and historical suburb of Fordsburg. It is a world of its own, a special world which pays tribute to its people with the Oriental Plaza being its epicentre and main attraction.

It was born in the 1970’s when, in terms of the forced application of apartheid, Indian traders in Vrededorp and Pageview were relocated and offered space in what is now the Oriental Plaza. The traders were allowed to buy their retail space here, however now, instead of trading among the people, they had to attract the people to them much as the great shopping malls now do that have since been developed.

The Oriental Plaza though, is unique among South African Shopping Centres as each store is owned by the shopkeeper with no burden of mall rental costs which allows them to offer discounted prices. The centre has earned quite the reputation where shoppers and shopkeepers can bargain and get just the right deal. In fact, many small businesses and flea market operators replenish their stocks at the Oriental Plaza.

This sizable, colourful and busy shopping centre has over 360 shops with a diversity which appeals to the widest variety of tastes, preferences and shopping needs from Indian Saris, spices and décor to hardware, gifts and cosmetics. Interestingly the Oriental Plaza is known for being the jewellery pricing hub of South Africa, maintaining a high quality at the lowest possible prices. here are also a number of restaurants that offer traditional Indian and South African meals, as well as a number of fast-food outlets.

A trip to the Oriental Plaza is a sensory experience with spicy flavours and aromas, rich colours and textures, and a flurry of shopping activity. Every possible space is utilised and, just when you think you have seen it all, you find another passage with more shops and items on display. This is a real one-stop-shop for visitors and locals in need.
