South Africa
plekke wat jy nooit sal vergeet nie

The Luthuli Museum is dedicated to conserving the philosophies and legacy of the late Chief Albert Luthuli. The Museum is housed in the former home of the Luthuli family in KwaDukuza Stanger in KwaZulu-Natal, a province which offers an impressive array of cultural, natural and historical tourist attractions.

Chief Albert Luthuli became the first African to receive the Nobel Peace Prize for his non-violent stance in the fight for liberation. Under the apartheid regime most documents, correspondence and literature generated by Chief Luthuli were banned, confiscated or located outside South Africa. In 2004, at the time of the Luthuli Museum’s inauguration the only surviving artefact on site was the physical home of Chief Luthuli.

The Museum has since been involved in the process of collecting photographs, paintings, artefacts and documents to assist with developing knowledge about the Legacy of Chief Luthuli and the Liberation Struggle in South Africa. Today it is filled with fascinating keepsakes that tell the exciting and sometimes sad stories of Luthuli and his comrades, and the roles they played in developing the new South Africa.

The Luthuli Museum supports onsite and travelling exhibitions and offers specific programmes for students and tourists. Visitors can also visit the grave site and statue of Albert Luthuli which is nearby the Museum.
