South Africa
skoonheid jy sal nooit vergeet nie

Every year, over the first weekend in February, Lake Deneys Yacht Club hosts the 'Round the Island Race'.

Guinness Book record

Famed for its 21 nautical mile route, the race currently holds the Guinness Book World Record for the biggest inland yacht race in the world. The record number of entries since its inception in 1958 was 721 boats. In 1999, 453 boats competed for the honours.

Everything from 'dinghies to catamarans' and 'keelboats to row boats', take part in this remarkable race, making it the highlight of the tourist calendar in Deneysville.

On average, 1,800 sailors and 3,300 visitors from all over South Africa and its neighbouring countries descend on the Club grounds to participate in the fun, festivity and challenge of this unique race.

1958

The Yacht race started in 1958 when aircrews from the old BOAC's (British Overseas Aircraft Corporation) Catalina Flying boats were based at the Yacht Club. Back then, the Vaal dam was an international air(dam)port! Bored by the long lapses between flights, a crew member dared one of his colleagues to race him round the island in the Vaal Dam and they raced their sailing dinghies in the very first Round the Island Race.

More information and entry forms can be found on the race website, www.ldyc.co.za.
