The Strand is a popular resort town situated at the foot of the Hottentots Holland Mountains, only 40 minutes from Cape Town. The town forms part of the picturesque Helderberg Basin along with Somerset West and Gordon’s Bay.
Strand, meaning “Beach” in Afrikaans, is the ideal family venue with plenty of fun and safe outdoor attractions and activities for young and old. As its name indicates though, the Strand’s main attraction is the beach. The white sandy beach stretches for 5 km and has the reputation of being the safest swimming beach in the country.
The beach is pet friendly, just remember to bring your pooches on their leash and stick to the designated areas. Life guards are on duty between December and April and the beach lies on the edge of a promenade with coffee shops, cafés and restaurants. There is also a large entertainment area with activities such as putt-putt, water slide and tidal and swimming pools.
The Strand began as a fishing and holiday resort and not much is different today. Close to the wine routes of Stellenbosch, the Somerset West Mall and the perfect coastal drive with plenty of whale watching viewpoints, the Strand is still very popular with holidaymakers.
The town offers all types of accommodation which includes, caravan and camping sites, self-catering chalets, bed and breakfasts, holiday apartments and an upmarket RCI Timeshare beachfront Hotel.

History
The Strand was established as a holiday and fishing resort in 1714. It was originally known as Mosterd’s Bay, Hottentots Holland Strand and then Somerset West Strand.
The first settler in the Hottentots Holland Strand was a Huguenot, named David du Buisson, who farmed in the area. Due to the abundance of fish in the area the Strand was established as a fishing village by 1714 the establishment of the De Beers Dynamite Factory in 1902 attracted more and more settlers to the area. The Factory and the prolific sea harvest all year round lead to the development of the Strand as a town and holiday resort.
