The small, picturesque village of Bot River, meaning butter river,
was given this name because the Hottentot tribe resident there used to sell butter to the European pioneers and the name stuck ever since.
The Bot River meanders its way through the town, the fertile valley surrounded by mountains covered in fynbos, historical wine farms, fields of wheat and into a large lagoon which forms a marshland at its mouth. This wetland is home to thousands of waterfowl and one of the only remaining herds of wild horses is said to still roam in this area.
The town is the centre of an onion-growing industry and nestles in the foothills of the Houw Hoek Mountains, en route to Hermanus.
Lying close to Kleinmond and Walker Bay, Botrivier is ideal for travellers who want to escape the crowds during the hectic whale-watching season without having to travel too far.
Bot Rivier is a haven for nature lovers, wine tasters and artists, and its sheer tranquillity provides a welcome escape from the general rat race.
Seemingly built in the 1890s, the Bot River Hotel serves as a drop-off point for the Baz Bus Shuttle, a hop on, hop off
backpacker shuttle that offers travellers of all ages a unique and inexpensive way to explore South Africa.
