Fort Pearson was built in 1878 and named after Colonel Charles Pearson, who led one of the columns that invaded Zululand in 1879.

Today there is no building, just trenches and tent sites. There are however, some war graves at the foot of the hill from that time and these can be found by travelling north on the N2 where there is a signboard before the Tugela River, on the right, directing you to the sites.
