The Heads, Knysna, Western Cape
The Knysna Heads are situated in Knysna in the Western Cape, South Africa.
Notorious for being the resting place of many fishermen and seamen that tried to negotiate this unpredictable and powerful waterway in the past, the famous Knysna Heads emerge from the ocean to stand tall, like two Sentries guarding the picturesque town and lagoon of Knysna.
The Heads are a stunning sight from a number of waterfront restaurants and tourist spots in Knysna. The East Head is easily accessible by car, visitors need only head out toward Leisure Isle which in itself is a worthwhile outing, boasting many wonderful restaurants and incredible views. The East Head has a number of viewing points and decks. Cony Glen Road has two, each offering a slightly different perspective of this natural wonder. A few beaches can be found along this route and many snorkelers, kite boarders, canoeists and kayakers can be found entering the water from these points.
The West Head is only accessible via a ferry trip across the lagoon. Several viewpoints can be found on this side as well and West Head is well worth a visit as it is also home to the Featherbed Nature Reserve. Ferry excursions can be taken from the Knysna waterfront daily, booking is essential and several types of tours are on offer from 75 minute trips to four hour cruises. Tours include Sunset Cruises, Oyster Cruises and Lagoon Cruises and those including the Featherbed Nature Reserve also include a 4 x 4 trip and a easy walk through the fynbos.
