Mokala National Park, Northern Cape
The Mokala National Park is situated 70 km outside Kimberley in the Northern Cape Province, South Africa.
The park stretches over 27 500 hectares with a varied landscape of koppieveld (hills) to wide open plains. Mokala is the Setswana name for Camelthorn Tree (Kameeldoring) and the Park is aptly named as it is dominated by these picturesque twisted and gnarled trees. Mokala’s thornveld savannah attracts a prolific number of bird species including Blacksmith lapwing, Cinnamon-Breasted Bunting, Freckled Nightjar, Short-Toed Rock Thrush and Pygmy Falcon.
Mokala is also known as an important area for regeneration of important species and is home to animals such as the Black and White Rhino, Buffalo, Tsessebe, Mountain Reedbuck, Sable, Zebra, Ostrich, Wildebeest, Duiker and Springbuck.
