The Robinson Pass is situated between Mossel Bay and Oudtshoorn in the Western Cape, South Africa.

The Pass can be found along the R328 and when it was originally laid in 1869, it was known as the Ruiterbosch Pass, as Ruiterbosch is considered the start of the Pass. The Commissioner of Roads at the time was Mr. Robinson, hence the name of the Pass today. The Pass is right in the center of the beautiful Little Karoo and Garden Route and was just one of the 26 Passes built by Thomas Bain. It was rebuilt many times over the past 145 years and was only tarred in the late 1950’s.

With sweeping curves and magnificent views around each corner, this Pass is a must when visiting the area. There are many places to where you can pull off the road to appreciate and photograph these superb views. The Valley is worth further exploration as it holds many little farms, art galleries and guest houses and the sheer magnitude of the Swartberg Mountains as you enter Oudtshoorn will not disappoint.

If you enjoy hiking then one of the best ways to truly appreciate the pass is to try out the Koumashoek Circuit. It is a six hour, fairly difficult hike with a few steep climbs, but if you are fit and up for the challenge the six hours spent in and around the valley will be worth it.
