Pilanesberg National Park, North West
Pilanesberg National Park in the North West Province of South Africa borders the world famous Sun City Resort, about 3 hours from Johannesburg and close to the towns of Rustenburg and Hartbeespoort.
The Pilanesberg National Park is the fourth largest in Southern Africa and covers approximately 55 000 hectares. It is easily accessible and a malaria free area and this adds to its popularity with tourists. The park is bursting with wildlife and because it is smaller than other national parks, visitors have a more than good chance of viewing the Big 5 – Lion; Rhino; Elephant; Leopard & Buffalo. History
An ancient volcano crater, formed about 1.2 million years ago, is where the Pilanesberg National Park is situated.
Prior to 1979, when the area was proclaimed a National Park, commercial farmers in the area had depleted the area of most indigenous wildlife. It was between 1979 and 1993 that the land was rehabilitated and restocked with wildlife, possibly the largest and most expensive African Game Reserve rehabilitation project ever on the African continent.
