The Nelson Mandela School of Medicine can be found on Umbilo Road Durban near the harbour. It was launched in 1950 and has been delivering doctors for this country ever since.

Clinical services are divided into the Inkosi Albert Luthuli Central Hospital (Durban) and Grey’s Hospital (Pietermaritzburg) and secondary services, based at King Edward VIII Hospital, Addington Hospital, Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Hospital, Prince Mshiyeni Hospital and RK Khan Hospital in Durban and Edendale Hospital in Pietermaritzburg.

  • The multi-million rand KwaZulu-Natal Research Institute for Tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS (K-RITH)
  • International centre of scientific research, started in 2012 and is located on the Medical School campus. This is an innovative partnership between UKZN and the Howard Hughes medical Institute in the United States.

History

1951 : The University of Natal Medical School was established.

1957 : The government attempted to wrest control of the medical school from the university. 

2000 : It was granted Nelson Mandela's name on its 50th Anniversary. 

2003 : Launch of the Doris Duke Medical Research Institute.

2004 : The University of Natal merged with University of Durban-Westville to form the UKZN.

2012 : KwaZulu-Natal Research Institute for Tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS.
