A Day Out with the Animals

The Bloemfontein Zoo was founded in 1906 and is one of the oldest zoos in South Africa. It covers 15 hectares of ground and is situated in the city’s largest green open space, Kings Park. The Zoo is also conveniently situated alongside the Kings Park Rose Garden and close to the Loch Logan Waterfront and is only about 10 minutes from the Bram Fischer International Airport.

The Zoo is home to a variety of animals including 65 mammal species and many exotic birds. The Zoo has always been well known for its large collection of primates, but what lifted the Zoo into international fame in 2005 was a resident Chimp named Charlie. Unfortunately Charlie developed a smoking habit after mimicking visitors who were smoking. The Zoo made a concerted effort to stop Charlie from smoking by asking visitors not to smoke. Despite his smoking habit, Charlie lived ten years longer than the average Chimp living in captivity. He passed away in October 2010 from natural causes.

Visitors to the Zoo can expect to see the famous “Big Five” as well as Antelope, Hippos, Panthers, tigers and many more! The Zoo also offers a variety of activities for young and old and there are plenty beautiful grassy areas to enjoy a picnic. So gather the family and enjoy a day out with the animals!
