The Hartbeespoort Dam in Hartbeespoort, Noordwes
The Dam was built on the farm Hatbeespoort which was owned by the Boer General, Hendrik Scheman. It was competed in 1923 and first overflowed the dam wall in 1925. The dam is an arch type dam, cradled in the lap of the Magaliesberg mountain range.
Hartbeespoort Dam was built across a gorge cutting through the Magalieberg and is fed by the Crocodile and Magalies Rivers.
The 20 square kilometre, Hartbeesoort Dam functions both as a source of irrigation and as a resort for holiday makers seeking both outdoor activities and the peace of the valley and charm of the countryside. A tar road hugs the water’s edge on the north side and passes through a 57 metre, long tunnel and across the magnificent dam wall. Visitors are urged to stop and walk across the wall which presents perfect photo opportunities!
Hartbeespoort Dam offers an array of water sports from speed boat cruises to lazy barge cruises offers buffet lunches and/or sundowners. Bring along your own jet ski or admire the water from a restaurant deck, either way the dam life is never dull!
If you are not over-nighting in the area, just a drive around the Dam will leave with many activities to choose from, stop at the Wall, choose from many restaurants and coffee shops, visit the snake park, or shop at the Curio Market. Hartbeespoort Dam has become, without a doubt, the main water recreation area of northern Gauteng!
