Swimming in the City!

Turkish baths were first introduced to Cape Town in 1926. This included a cold plunge pool, hot saunas and massage facilities delivering a real “hamman” experience. Today they no longer offer massages but the baths are well utilised and the sauna is very popular. They can accommodate up to 800 people with a maximum of 600 in the pools at any one time.

Facilities

  • 25 metre Swimming Pool
  • Change rooms and Sun Deck
  • First Aid room
  • Hot Room and Showers
  • Kids Swimming Pool
  • Lifeguards at peak season
  • Sauna
  • Steam Rooms

The Architect

Karinina Ingwersen used to swim at Long Street Baths every week and as time passed she saw the signs of wear and tear on the building. Being an architect she took the initiative and started looking into the feasibility of a rejuvenation project. She approached the Municipality Council but soon found out she needed to give them more information if she was to have the cooperation she needed for the project so she set about putting together plans and drawing up a feasibility study to present to the Council. She envisaged mosaics around the arches of the baths to give it an authentic Turkish ambiance. An important factor in her proposals was to make sure the facility would be easily maintained in the long term. Self-sustainability needs to be addressed if the facility is to be made into a top class municipal amenity serving the many international tourists who flock to the city each year. The proposed upgrades to the facility may be the solution to make the baths a self sustaining facility. Several institutions have come together to facilitate the implementation of the plans and more information regarding these can be viewed on their website.
