Next to the N3 highway, sandwiched between another two townships,Thokoza and Vosloorus, 35 km east of Johannesburg and south of Germiston, likes the township of Katlehong.
Katlehong, meaning ‘place of success', is a high-density area that was established in 1945. The southern part of the township consists of six informal settlements with serious overcrowding problems. To make ends meet there are shacks set up for rent in the already tiny yards that exist. Five to six families often have to share one toilet and inspite of being surrounded by an industrial area, there is a very high level of unemployment.
Katlehong is one of the most poorly served areas in Gauteng in terms of community development and together with Thokoza and Vosloorus it forms the second largest black township, after that of Soweto.
