Komatipoort is named after the Nkhomati River, a Swazi word meaning “river of cows”. It was established in 1890 by the Dutch railroad company who constructed the railway from the Mozambique border to Pretoria.
The town became the depot and construction camp of the Dutch company, the Netherlandsche Zuidafrikaansche Spoorweg Maatschappy, during the building of the Eastern Line.
During the Ango-Boer War, Komatipoort was the base for the celebrated Colonel Ludwig Steinacker and his forty thieves.
