The Mapungubwe National Park is situated 480 km north of Pretoria, on the northern border where the country meets with Botswana and Zimbabwe. The congruence of the Sashe and Limpopo rivers and the borders of three countries marks the spot of this prestigious South African-UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The Park offers a truly unique experience as it is as rich in history as it is in wildlife and flora. Well before 900 AD, this landscape was occupied by people and pre-historic animals, such as dinosaurs. Southern Africa’s first kingdom was established here at Mapungubwe Hill between 1200 and 1290 AD. Take a tour and explore the site where the famous Golden Rhino was discovered in one of the graves thought to be the grave of a king!
The Interpretative Centre also offers tours of the historic museum to learn about the history of this World Heritage Site.
Mapungubwe National Park extends over 28 000 hectares and consists of a sprawling open savannah landscape and is a merger of the Mapungubwe Cultural Landscape and a game reserve. Game viewing and guided walks, accompanied by professional and experienced Rangers, means guests can track down the animals that are known to wander the bushveld, from various Antelope such as Eland and Gemsbok to Giraffe, Elephants and White Rhino. Mapungubwe also offers an excellent variety of birds for the avid bird watcher to enjoy and a highlight would most certainly be the high tree top walk among the riverine forest on a raised canopy walk that takes you to a hide overlooking the Limpopo River!
Day visitors are welcome, and the Park offers five separate accommodation options which includes the Main Camp, Tshugulu Lodge, Wilderness Camp, Forest Tented Camp and Camping Site.
