New Year's Festival of Lights

Light Up The Night Sky

The town of Nieu-Bethesda, just outside Graaff-Reinet, may be a small town, but it definitely holds a big New Years’ event.  The New Years’ Eve Festival of Lights event sees people gathering from far and wide to enjoy this spectacular festival of lanterns.

Hosted by the Bethesda Arts Centre, the New Year’s Eve Festival of Lights is a truly inspiring community event. The Parade is a celebration of joy, crossing over all cultural and religious barriers, symbolising the hope and beauty of the community.

The Festival begins with a performance in the Centre’s outside Courtyard Theatre and before the parade begins, visitors can attend a lantern making workshop and create their own masterpiece or if you prefer you can have a lantern made for you. Just remember if you planning on attending the lantern making workshop you will need to book in advance.

Although the Lantern Parade is surely the highlight of the festival, the fun and entertainment does not stop there. The Parade winds through the township and ends again at the Centre where the evening continues with great food and wonderful live music - the dancing is said to carry on well into the New Year!
