Alanglade Huis Museum

The Alanglade Museum is situated in Pilgrim’s Rest in Mpumalanga, South Africa. It can be located a few kilometres to the north of this historic village on the Mpumalanga Escarpment. The residence is surrounded by mountains and shady forests that to this day provides an atmosphere of quiet opulence and serenity.

The Museum was the residence of several Mine Managers up until 1972, when the last mine was finally closed. The building was built and completed in 1915 by the Transvaal Gold Mining Estate (TGME). It is a large and graceful double story building, which is in sharp contrast to the other mostly corrugated iron buildings in town, showing the high status Mine Managers of the period enjoyed.

Today the building is a period house Museum with items on display from the early 1900’s using. The furnishings used reflect a 'modern' Edwardian approach and are mostly of Arts & Crafts, Art Nouveau and Art Deco stylistic origins. Architecturally, Alanglad conforms to the design essentials of early twentieth century buildings, i.e. simplicity, harmonious proportions between roof, walls, and wall openings, effective use of materials and the integration of the building in its surroundings. Visitors are able to see the reconstruction of how life was experienced in an upper class home of the early 20th century. On display in the kitchen you will find almost every type of appliance and gadget that was used back then and the rooms are completed entirely with period furnishings.

Guided tours can be arranged up to thirty minutes prior from the Information Office.
