Before the 2010 FIFA World Cup ™ the Eastern Cape had never had a world-class stadium. Thanks to South Africa being the host country to this huge sporting event, Port Elizabeth became the proud home to the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium.

The Stadium is situated in the North End on the shores of the North End Lake and close to the Ocean, making a remarkable difference to the look and feel of Port Elizabeth’s industrial area. This state of the art multipurpose stadium was designed to resemble an enormous flower, most locals identify it as a Protea, with petal-like panels making up the open roof. The flower design was not only aesthetically pleasing, but was also chosen because the carefully selected design can withstand the strong winds this city is well-known for!

The Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium was built for enjoyment, hosting both sporting and cultural events as well as offering conferencing facilities in over 50 venues for Gala dinners, conferencing, weddings or cocktail functions. The building is five storeys high with a capacity of 48 459 with including 49 hospitality suits, two lounges, a number of lecture rooms as well as a gymnasium. During the 2010 World Cup, the stadium hosted 8 football matches!

The seats are randomly coloured in different shades of orange and red which helps make the stadium look fuller on the television screen and the two massive screens inside the stadium ensure spectators do not miss a single part of the action on the field and/or stage!

Visitors are treated not only to the sporting fixtures, cultural and music events but also breath-taking views of the city and surrounds – well worth a visit if you have the time!
