Transforming the Inner City

Like many cities worldwide, Johannesburg is transforming its inner city. Main Street, once a "no go" area, has been transformed into a friendly, interesting place to walk along its many cobbled, pedestrianised blocks which are enjoyed by many every day of the week. It is also a nice environment in which to relax.

On weekdays Main street is filled with office-workers enjoying its many street cafes and hundreds of workers in the CBD gather at Main Street Mall during lunchtime to enjoy their lunch -- sitting under the indigenous trees where an old red mining stamp mill and locomotive are on display - or relaxing in Gandhi Square.

Main Street is the heart of the City of Gold's mining history and a number of mining companies’ headquarters, including BHP Billiton, Anglo Platinum, Anglo Gold, Goldfields and the Chamber of Mines. As the street is rich with mining history, a mining theme was chosen. Artefacts from the early days of mining - grey iron dustbins and underground locomotives, covered wagons, stamp presses and headgear from an old mine shaft - has seen Main Street transformed into a cobbled celebration of the city's rich and fascinating mining heritage. Water taps, giving pedestrians the chance to refresh themselves, also dot the road.

With the mining companies requiring a high security presence the area is safe, clean and pleasant to explore at your own pace. Look our for the beautiful leaping impala statue (The Stampede) and Mapungubwe’s Golden Rhino along the brick walkway.
