The Walter Sisulu National Botanical Gardens has proudly been voted the best picnic spot in Gauteng for 5 years in a row. The Garden was only founded in 1982 but has been a popular venue for outings since the 1800's.

Where Eagles Soar

Set against the backdrop of the magnificent Witpoortjie Waterfall, this Garden covers almost 300 hectares and consists of both landscaped and natural veld areas. The natural vegetation of the area is known as 'Rocky Highveld Grassland' and consists of a mosaic of grassland and savanna, with dense bush in kloofs and along streams. These variety of habitats accommodate over 600 naturally occurring plant species. These beautiful gardens are home to an abundance of wildlife with over 220 birds species recorded on site. A breeding pair of majestic Verreaux's Eagles nest on the cliffs alongside the waterfall. There are also a number of reptiles and small mammals, including small antelope and jackals, which occur naturally in the Nature Reserve.

There are several short walks or runs through the garden and surrounding natural areas, and those feeling energetic can head for the top of the waterfall. The JCI Geological Trail offers the opportunity to learn about the interesting geology of the area and guided tours can be arranged for groups.

The Garden serves as an important conservation area. For these reasons the following are not allowed into the Garden:

• Kites
• Frisbees
• Skateboards
• Rollerblades
• Scooters
• Fires
• Gas braais
• Dogs/cats
• Musical instruments, radios/CD players.

Wheelchair Accessibility

Most parts of the Garden, leading from the main entrance, are accessible by wheelchair.

Train Rides

There is a minature train that will drop you off at the waterfall or just for the fun of it, take an enjoyable round trip.

Guided Tours

The Environmental Education and Empowerment Division of SANBI conduct guided tours and will show you some amazing SA fauna and flora. These tours are for the General Public, learners and teachers. Booking is necessary.

The Nursery

The nursery sells a variety of plants to the public. These include trees, shrubs, groundcovers, succulents, water plants, grasses, bulbs, plants for bonsai, climbing plants and hanging baskets.

Eagles Fare Restaurant

Enjoy a delicious breakfast, lunch, tea or Sunday buffet under a huge white stinkwood or on the wooden deck. Eagles cater for functions of up to 120 guests and offer Pensioners specials on Tuesdays.
