Tzaneen is situated in the Limpopo Province, South Africa.
The town is the second largest, after Polokwane, in the Mopani District of the Province and is described as a sub-tropical garden town, producing just about anything sub-tropical coffee, tea, avocados, citrus fruit, nuts, mangoes and litchis.
It is set at the foot of the Wolkberg Mountains in the northern reaches of the Drankensberg range and offers visitors an almost constant change of scenery from mountain ranges to plantations and unspoilt natural environment. A 40 km circular drive around Tzaneen passes woodland, streams and farming landscapes. In fact, Tzaneen is regarded as one of the most attractive recreation and tourist areas in the country.
Tzaneen has developed into a popular tourist center, both as a stopover to the Kruger National Park and as a base in which to explore the surrounding area, offering tourists many attractions such as the Mighty Baobab Tree, archaeological sites, wildlife and nature reserves.
There are a number of comfortable hotels, B & B’s, Guesthouses, backpackers’ accommodation, camping and caravan sites to suit all visitors to the area.

Climate
Tzaneen experiences a more than average rainfall all year round, with the highest occurring between November and February.
Summer months, October to March will experience average temperatures of between 18˚C to 31˚C.
Winter months, May to August, will bring temperatures down to between 8˚C and 24˚C.
Transport
There are daily flights from Johannesburg into the Hendrik van Eck Airport in Phalaborwa. Car rental companies are available for easy access to Tzaneen, approximately and hour and 20 minutes away. Road trips from Johannesburg via the N1 and R71 will take approximately four and a half hours.

History
The town of Tzaneen which was named after the resident tribe, the Tzaneng, was established in 1912 as a centre for this agriculture area.
The elimination of malaria in the area made the valley as healthy as any other part of the sub-tropics and Tzaneen prospered. The Dr. Siegfried Annecke Research Institute is situated there and with its work on malaria largely completed, it is now involved in research on bilharzia.
