take your head out of the sand

Sandkraalpoort Pass is located almost midway between Willowmore and Steytlerville, the first of a few along these gravel pass roads on the ridges of the Grootrivierberge.

Distance 3.2 km
Gradient average 1:178
Gradient maximum 1:20
Summit 575 m
Surface Gravel / Dirt Track

The poort is short and an easy drive with an easy average gradient of only 1:178 which is about as flat as one can get. Sandkraalpoort is followed by a number of other poorts in the vicinity, most of similar length, so there will be time to turn off and explore others such as the Bikamma Pass. There is minimal traffic and you will immediately have a sense of solitude along this quiet road. Watch out for animals, both wild and domestic!

The road itself is in reasonable condition, as far as gravel roads go, and can be accessed just off the R329 travelling from Willowmore to Steytlerville. Travel past two farms, the second named Sandkraal, and no doubt after which the poort is named, to reach the start which is 7 km from the R329.

Approaching from the north is a little more complex as there are a myriad of farm roads to navigate and it would be easy to get lost here if you do not have a GPS.
