Beautiful Golden Landscapes

Moorreesburg is centrally situated in the Western Cape, only an hour from Cape Town and 70 km from the West Coast with the closest town being Riebeek West a mere 30 km away along a winding road surrounded by farms. The buzz on the street is that the town is fast becoming a commuter town, but you would have to enjoy peace and quiet if your believe this.

The perfect town to break away from the hustle and bustle, Moorreesburg can be mistaken as a typical one-horse town however visitors will be delighted to find that they are mistaken and that in fact there are a number of tourist attractions to visit and activities in which to participate. The peaceful atmosphere, friendly people and fresh air make it impossible to stay indoors and you can find plenty of activities at either the Misverstand Dam or the Berg River, the town even has its own 9-hole golf course.

Moorreesburg is also the centre of the regions wheat industry and the surrounding landscape is a breathtaking scene of alternating wintergreens and summer gold wheat fields. The Wheat Industry Museum, housed in the old Dutch Reformed Mission Church building, is an obvious attraction to visit.

This friendly town invites travelers to stop in and enjoy the hospitality and comfort that can be found in its Guest Farms, B&B’s and self-catering cottages that are scattered in and around the area. There is also a tented campsite on the river.

Climate

The area receives most of its rainfall between June and August and enjoys a mild Mediterranean climate most of the year.

Summer months, November to March will have average temperatures of between 16˚C and 30˚C.

Winter months, May to August will have average temperatures of between 7˚C and 17˚C.

Transport

There are daily domestic and international flights into Cape Town International Airport and Moorreesburg is approximately 100 km away via the N7.  Car rental companies are located at the Airport.

History

Moorreesburg was first laid out on the farm Hooikraal in 1879. From 1882 the town was administered by a village management and only gained municipal status in 1909.The town was named after J.C. Le Febre Moorrees, Minister of the Swartland congregation of the Nederduitse Gereformeerde Kerk between 1833 and 1881.

Wheat has been growing in the areas since 1752 and the surrounding area continues to be devoted to wheat fields and sheep farming.
