Gateway to Mpumalanga's Highlands Meander
Belfast is conveniently situated alongside the main highway en-route to the world-renowned Kruger National Park, a mere 90 minutes from Johannesburg and Pretoria. It is a naturally beautiful location and is seen as one of the most popular tourist destinations for visitors who love the outdoor life.
Belfast is not only one of the most beautiful places you will visit, but also one of the coldest. Its’ small town friendly and homely atmosphere however makes up for the cold and the town has become one of the most popular destinations for avid fishermen, even in the cold! With no less than 7 fully stocked trout dams, and Dullstroom, also a fishing destination, only a short drive away, it is no wonder the area is well-known for fly fishing.
Belfast earned its status as "Disabled Friendly" by ensuring its fishing facilities are accessible to wheelchairs and disabled anglers.
Belfast provides the perfect base from which to explore and enjoy the beauty of the surrounding landscape through numerous horse riding, hiking and cycling trails. Within an hours’ drive you have a number of towns such as Dullstroom, Waterval Boven and Lydenburg, all offering their own unique and charming attractions.
Belfast offers accommodation by way of quaint Guest Houses, self-catering cottages, B&B’s and Fishing Farm Estates.

History
Belfast was established in 1890 on the farm Tweefontein. The farm's owner Richard Charles O'Neill, an Irishman from the well-known Ulster family, named the town after the Irish city in which he was born.
The battle of Bergendal took place near Belfast in August 1900. It was the only occasion on which all four Long Toms were used in the same battle.
The town has a long mining heritage and is especially well known for its famous, fine black granite. Coal, iron, chrome, fire clay and kaolin are also mined in the vicinity.
Flowers are also important to our economy, and around 6 million tulip bulbs are produced here annually for export. The sight of these tulips and daffodils in September is unforgettable - don't miss the annual tulip festival at Hadeco!
In 2009 the town's name changed to eMakhazeni meaning "The Cold Place". This town is one of the coldest in South Africa. It is known by both Belfast and eMakhazeni.
