Bethal is a small farming town in the Cosmos countryside of Mpumalanga, just under two hours drive from Johannesburg.
There are no notable tourist attractions in Bethal and no game farms in the surrounding area however, clean air, nature at its finest and warm hospitality are just a few of the ingredients that make this part of our country so special. Bethal also has easy access to other attractions in the nearby towns of Secunda and Ermelo and the town sees many travellers, business and leisure, who are en-route to other areas in the province or Swaziland.
Today Bethal mainly farms maize, sunflowers and potatoes. The town was once South Africa’s main potato producing area and still today hosts the National Potato Festival each year in May and despite all the power stations which have mushroomed around the town, this time of year here is particularly pretty as the beautiful pink and white Highveld cosmos flowers never fail to bloom along the sides of the road, creating a carpet of pastel colour!
As Bethal is an agricultural community, it is highly recommended that visitors to the area go on a fun-filled and insightful agricultural tour. Bethal is also a mining community. It contains 20 coal mines and 3 gold mines which are always exciting to experience and tour.
Despite being seen as only a stop over town, Bethal has several quaint guesthouses and luxury establishments available to visitors.

In 1904, Bethal was declared a municipality and Mr George Hutchinson was appointed the first Chairman. By 1905 the railway line from Springs to the Natal North coast reached Bethal which contributed greatly to the prosperity of the town.
