Boknes is a quiet, seaside, holiday village, 36 km from Port Alfred and approximately halfway between Port Elizabeth and East London. The village has approximately 800 stands, with 300 houses, of which about 150 are permanent residents. The name Boknes is derived from Khoekhoen and means ‘father’s river’.
Boasting the highest number of sunny days in South Africa, this stretch of the eastern coastline is known as the Sunshine Coast and has the best of both worlds - the unique Eastern Cape Valley thicket with its amazingly diverse eco-system, and its magnificent unspoilt beaches.
At the main beach the Boknes River forms a lagoon, which opens to the sea after heavy rains. This lagoon area is a breeding ground for many bird species.
Whale and dolphin watching is excellent, and the area is also known as a fisherman's paradise for both surf and deep-sea angling. For a good stroll along the beach you can walk to the Diaz Cross, around 4 km from Boknes beach. (on your left when looking out to sea).
During the year the village is fairly quiet but during the summer holidays it comes to life when the community hall gets used and the children and youth get together on the beach for group activities and sports.
