Gardens Skate Park (The Mill Park)

Gardens Skate Park, also known as The Mill Park, is situated near the Gardens Centre on the corner of Maynard and Upper Mill Streets, right next to the MyCiTiBus terminus for easy access. It was built by the City of Cape Town's Spatial Planning and Urban Design after winning the Building Trust Playscapes Design Competition. The park was officially opened on 2nd August 2014 and has given the youth of City Bowl 400 square meters of much needed recreation space. Structure

The park was built by Spyda Ramps, Nammic Engineering, C2C Consulting Engineers and the Spatial Planning & Urban Design Branch at the City of Cape Town. The fenced concrete park caters for the beginner as well as the more skilled, and even professional skater, and includes:

  • Lighting for night time use
  • Pipe Jam
  • Manual Pads
  • Air Wedges
  • Stairs
  • Gentle Slopes
  • Curved Ramps

The park may be used for:

  • Skateboarding
  • BMX biking
  • Scooters
  • Rollerblading
  • Roller-skating

Project design

This project became a reality from being chosen as the winning entry of a competition called the Building Trust International PLAYscapes Design that included 500 entries from around the world. The City’s Mayoral committee member for Community services and special projects, Alderman Belinda Walker said, "We expect that this skate park will bring a unique flavour to the central city and will be a place where many young people can devote time to their passion of skateboarding.”
