Ballito is one of South Africa’s most popular holiday destinations and it’s no doubt because of its gorgeous coastline with stunning scenery and warm waters. The Ballito to Salt Rock Trail is a wonderful coastal walk/hike that takes just over an hour, walking at a comfortable pace.

It is ideal to have two cars and leave one at each end of the trail, but if this is not possible, it is possible to do a return walk as there are plenty stop off points with benches to rest along the way. It is suggested that you park near the Gallery Beach Bar and take the stairs here down to the paved Ballito Boardwalk, turn left onto the boardwalk and begin the coastal trail from this point – don’t forget your sunscreen, hat and camera as well as a swimming costume, mask and snorkel as there are several tidal pools along the route.

At the start and if you are lucky, you may find the sand artists at work where you can take photos of their amazing artwork for a few bucks. Follow the boardwalk from the first tidal pool and past the lifesavers club, hereafter the walk continues further on the beach. You will pass a huge tidal pool and after this beach walk the path cuts up into the cliffs at Shaka’s Rock. Here you will find a wonderful viewpoint to stop and take a few photos and catch your breath.

The path continues over a rocky stretch to more cliffs. If the tide is out you can walk around on the rocky platforms, but if the sea is a little wild, we suggest not chancing it and rather take the steps up and over the top. On the other side you can expect yet another tidal pool and a long stretch of beach to the Salt Rock parking lot.
