History
The town of Dullsroom, situated in the Steenkampsberg mountain range, dates back to the early 1880’s when Dutch settlers came to the area. It was founded in 1883 as the centre for an irrigation settlement directed by Wolterus Dull of Holland. It was aptly named Dullstoom, “stroom” meaning stream, referring to the abundance of water in the area. The Crocodile River has its origin here.
Architecture in the town is a mixture of 19th and 20th century building designs.
During the Anglo-Boer War the settlement was destroyed and most of the original Dutch settlers returned to Holland.
Elm and Beech trees planted by the Dutch pioneers remain and there is a small memorial erected by the Dutch settlers in 1887.
