Comrades Marathon

“It Takes All of You – Zinikele”

The Comrades Marathon is a South African institution, internationally recognised for the incredible challenge it poses on the body and for the camaraderie it inspires among the thousands of runners participating in this world famous ultra-marathon!

The race alternates annually between the up run from Durban and the down run from Pietermaritzburg.  The Marathon first took place in 1921 with only 48 runners taking part. A time limit of 12 hours was set and Bill Rowan became the inaugural winner with a time of 8hrs and 59mins. 2017 is an “up run” and sees runners running between the coastal town of Durban and the provinces capital Pietermaritburg.

Old Mutual sponsors the premier ulta-marathon and over the past 92 years, the Comrades marathons spirit has moved and inspired generations of athletes and supporters with its tales of courage, camaraderie, perseverance and legendary. The route is very hilly and tremendously tough, demanding the discipline and long-term commitment of a dedicated athlete. The hard work, discipline and dedication required of each runner has undeniably made the phrase “It takes All of You – Zinikele”.

Registration will take place at the Durban Exhibition Centre where the Comrades marathon Expo is being held. Supporters, runners and Comrades enthusiast are all welcome.
