The pretty little beachside village of Gonubie lies on the beautiful estuary of the Gonubie River, on the outskirts of East London.
The beach, safe for swimming, has mammoth sand dunes which are protected by a boardwalk and the river, navigable by small boats for 5km, is perfect for picnics.
The estuary at Gonubie River mouth is abundant with marine life and the lagoon is surrounded by sheer cliffs that offer prolific birdlife.
Gonubie has a Nature Reserve established around its coastal wetland which is home to over 160 species of birds and the Kwelera Nature Reserve is just north of the town.
When the tide is out, the lagoon is a perfect place to while away the time, exploring or collecting shells, or watching water snails and birds.
Gonubie's beach has Blue Flag status and from the cliffs above the lagoon whales and dolphins can be spotted. Water activities such as river and rock fishing, surfing, paddling and boating are enjoyed by visitors who come from all over the world.
The name of the town is derived from the Xhosa word 'qunube', meaning wild bramble berries and the town has one of the most attractively situated caravan parks in South Africa.
