History
During the late nineteenth century, the Groenfontein Farm was donated to the Orange Free State by a local farmer of Huguenot descent. The land was used as a temporary capital during the Second Boer War and so the town of Fouriesburg was founded in 1892. It was named after the owner of the original farm owner, Christoffel Fourie.
The Sesotho name for the town is Mashaeng, which means 'place of big harvests'.
