Jewel of KwaZulu Natal
Greytown lies in the forest-clad, rolling hills of the Natal Midlands just over an hour away from Durban. It is an ideal rest-stop when travelling the Natal Midlands or the Battlefields Route.
The picturesque little town is often referred to as the jewel of KwaZulu Natal, offering scenic drives, period buildings and plenty of Boer history. The area around Greytown is overflowing with rolling sugar cane, pine, wattle, gum and poplar forests, the winding roads are overlooked by a collection of aloes and euphorbia that cluster on the hillsides, making this an incredibly wonderful drive.
Greytown has a number of interesting buildings to visit which include a mosque, various churches, the Town Hall and a Temple. The Greytown Museum is now a national monument and is considered one of the better small museums in the country.

Climate
Greytown receives approximately 858 mm of rain annually with most of its annual rainfall during summer.
Summer months, November to March will have average temperatures of between 14˚C and 26˚C.
Winter months, May to August will have average temperatures of between 3˚C and 20˚C.
Transport
There are daily local flights into Pietermaritzburg Airport, approximately 82 Km’s away via the R33, and intoKing Shaka International Airport in Durban, approximately 122 Km’s away. Car hire facilities are available at the Airport.
History
Greytown was established in 1850 as the main centre for the area. It was named in honour of Sir George Edward Grey, Governor of the Cape Colony. It was a frontier town then, separated from the independent country of the Zulu’s by the deep valley of the Tugela River.
General Louis Botha was born on a farm five kilometres south of Greytown. Botha commanded the Boer forces during the Anglo-Boer War and became the first prime minister of the Union of South Africa in 1910.
