Highveld Heritage Route
The little town of Ermelo in south-east Mpumalanga is considered to be the centre of the Highveld Heritage Route with travellers often choosing it as their base camp from which to start their exciting escapade.
Other towns such as Badplaas, Breyten, Carolina and Chrissiesmeer are included on this route which is packed with culture, history, numerous adventures, mystery, relaxation, treasures and wildlife.
Mushroom Rock
You can visit the ancient past in the Batwa Valley with its giant mushroom rock, also known as Murder Rock and its incredible stories of ancient wars.
Goliath's Footprint
Another must see is Mpuluzi's Footprint, also known as Goliath's Footprint, a l.5m perfectly formed footprint.
Early artefacts, rock art and soot-blackened cave walls speak sadly of a San people called the Tlou E'Tie who once dwelt here before the warring Nguni tribes drove them out with their assegais.
Chrissiesmeer
Enjoy the little town of Chrissiesmeer and its beautiful old sandstone houses where Boers and Brits fought and fell in the Anglo-Boer War of 1901. Visit the cemetery where you’ll find the British soldiers and the Boers who did not support the cause of the battle are buried in the opposite direction.
Natural Bridge
The natural erosion bridge and the largest freshwater lake in South Africa, is surrounded by 270 other lakes in the Chrissiesmeer area and is where thousands of flamingoes come each year to breed.
Wesselton
Visit Wesselton and take a township tour where you'll get a warm welcome from the vibrant community before quenching your thirst at the local shebeen.
Ebutseni Swazi Village
At Oshoek pop into Ebutseni, a traditional Swazi village close to the South African-Swaziland border.
Go wild
You can go wild in the Nkomazi Game Reserve and Songimvelo Nature Reserve.
Badplaas
Take a dip in the hot mineral springs at Badplaas or choose the tranquillity of the Matotoland lake district where 270 lakes shimmer like jewels among lush grass and wetlands with superb birding opportunities.
Bonnefoi Ghost Village
Add some mystery to your Highveld Heritage tour by visiting the ghost village of Bonnefoi where you will be met with an eerie silence with its deserted mansion, silent post office and derelict hotel. Marvel at the hand-built stone circles, estimated to have been built thousands of years ago, but by whom? Until today nobody knows the answer!
