History
Porterville is a farming centre, founded in 1863 after Frederick John Owen, one of the original 1820 Settlers, subdivided his farm Pomona into plots, and named the town after William Porter, the Attorney-General at that time.
Porter arrived in the Cape Colony, bringing what he called “an unspeakable hatred of oppression of every kind”, and set about promoting equal rights and justice for all, regardless of race or class.
