Get Closer to Nature

The National Zoological Gardens of South Africa is the largest zoo in the country and the only one with national status. More than 600 000 people visit the Zoo annually. The total length of the walkways in the Zoo is appoximately 6 km. An Aquarium and Reptile Park also form part of the Zoo facility. The Aquarium is the largest inland aquarium in the country.

The 85-hectare Zoological Gardens in Pretoria houses:

  • 2 586 specimens of 126 mammal species
  • 1 425 specimens of 158 bird species
  • 4 189 specimens of 283 fish species
  • 235 specimens of 21 invertebrate species
  • 447 specimens of 90 reptile species
  • 29 specimens of 4 amphibian species

Cableway

The cableway operates from 10h00 to 16h15, Monday to Sunday

Parking

Ample, secure parking is available opposite and at the main entrance of the National Zoological Gardens of South Africa and on the corner of Paul Kruger and Boom Streets. Security staff are on duty at all parking facilities for your peace of mind. 

For the hungry

The cafeteria has a wide variety of delicious take-aways and four kiosks offer snacks. The restaurant also provides sit down meals. There are numerous picnic spots located throughout the Zoo where you can relax in the shade of giant trees. Braai facilities are available at the picnic area located next to the Apies River.

Tours

A number of exciting tours, such as night tours and camping tours, are offered by the Zoo. Bookings are essential and can be made telephonically or by visiting our offices at the NZG in Boom Street, Pretoria.

Visiting hours

The Zoo is open 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Tickets can be bought from 08h30 until 16h30. The Zoo closes at 17h30.
