The Magersfontein War Museum and Battlefield is situated about 31.5 km outside Kimberley in the Northern Cape Province, South Africa.

The Museum was renovated with an excellent audio visual display allowing the visitor to experience the battle, as guns fire in the background and to watch the battle take place right before their eyes in a reconstructed trench.

The Museum has examples of uniforms and a selection of guns used by both the British and Boer soldiers. The tours of the battlefield are taken with experienced and knowledgeable guides who add much value to the site. A trip to Kimberley is not complete without a visit to this historic venue.

History

The Magersfontein Battle between the British and the Boers, led by General P.J. Cronje, took place on 11 December 1899. The Boers had dug trenches at the base of the hills and fired on the advancing British troops who believed they were camped on the slops instead. Troops who survived the onslaught of fire from the Boers were trapped on the battlefield in the heat of the day and many died from sunstroke and exposure. The Boers were victorious and over 200 British were killed in the battle.
