Sydney on Vaal, Northern Cape
Sydney on Vaal in the Northern Cape Province, is situated just 30 km north of Barkly West and less than 10 minutes outside of Delportshoop.
Sydney on Vaal is a historic alluvial diamond mining village. It has always been a secluded and private village and has soon come to even be called a ghost town. A gravel road winds through old diamond digging areas before crossing the Vaal River and entering the private village. Although a little run-down, the town still epitomises turn-of-the-century colonial elegance and offers some wonderful Victorian style architecture to admire.
Despite its small size, Sydney on Vaal consists really of a general dealer, garage, municipal buildings and a church, the small village offers a few attractions which includes the Mendelssohn Library containing what is arguably the finest private collection of rare volumes in the country.
Accommodation for day visits into Sydney on Vaal includes Guest Houses, B&B’s and self-catering units in the surrounding area.

Climate
Sydney On Vaal receives approximately 419 mm of rain annually with most rainfall occurring during Spring and Summer.
Summer months, November to March will have average temperatures of between 14˚C and 34˚C.
Winter months, May to August will have average temperatures of between 1˚C and 23˚C.
Transport
There are daily flights into Kimberley Airport, approximately 74 Km’s via the R31. Car hire facilities are available at the Airport.
History
Founded in 1902, Sydney on Vaal is variously named after Sidney Mendelssohn, Director of the Vaal River Diamond and Exploration Company which owned the land, as well as its situation on the Vaal River and after Sydney Shippard, Acting Attorney of the Executive Council of Griqualand West in 1872.
PLEASE NOTE: Vaalbos National Park has been closed. The animals were all relocated to Mokala National Park, which is 50 km north of Kimberley on the N12, beyond Modder River.
