The Sea & All Its’ Treasures

Situated on the grounds of the Laaiplek Hotel in Velddrif is the SA Fisheries Museum. The Museum, for many years, was originally located in Hout Bay in Cape Town, but was relocated to this restored historical building at the Laaiplek Harbour in 2009. The building dates back to the 1800’s and represents a time when Johan Stephan of St Helena Bay established his lucrative trading empire right in front of this building near the mouth of the Berg River.

The Museum is a popular tourist attraction especially for those who are interested in boats and all the treasures that the sea has to offer. Jaco Louw a model boat builder, exhibits in the Museum and he has quite a few Scale Model Trawlers on display, all made with an unbelievable amount of detail. Visitors can also read about various sea creatures and enjoy underwater displays.

The Museum depicts the history of West Coast Fishing Industry from the intrepid days of whaling and whalers to the current deep sea fishing and Rock Lobster catching as well as the local Bokkum drying industry. Along with the history of the fishing industry, the Museum intertwines the colourful local history and culture of the West Coast. A true treasure of an attraction in this small seaside village, come and enjoy!
