Hub of the West Coast
The town of Vredenburg is only 15 km from Saldanha Bay and about an hour and half drive from Cape Town. Its’ main attraction, as with most of the West Coast villages, is the exquisite show of colourful flowers starting around June each year.
There are an abundance of outdoor activities on sea and land, from canoeing and swimming to hiking and horse riding. The town is also a great spot for birdwatching and holiday makers looking for special art and craft stalls. The main tourist attraction to visit will no doubt be the Fossil Park which has many fascinating and interesting artifacts from yesteryear.
Vredenburg is known as the business hub of several smaller towns along the coastline, stretching from Langebaan in the south to Velddrif in the north. The only major shopping mall along the West Coast is situated here offering several major retailers all under one roof.
This busy little town is the perfect stopover or starting point to visiting Saldanha Bay, St Helena Bay, Langebaan or Paternoster and offers comfortable lodges and B&B’s to suit all types of holidaymakers.

History
Initially the the development of the area was hampered by the lack of fresh water and a feud ensued over a spring that served the neighbouring farms of Heuningklip and Witteklip. Vredenburg was known as Agterbaai at this time and the closest church was Hopefield, six hours travel by horse and car. The Dutch Reformed Church decided to build a church for the congregation in 1875 and a Deacon acquisitioned a piece of land on the farm Twisfontein (fountain of strife) which was close to the spring. He helped settle the dispute among the farmers in the area about the water. After the inauguration of the church, peace reigned and the town was renamed Vredenburg, “vrede” meaning “peace”.
Today the town is accumulation of fish factories, local services, hospitals, schools and a shopping malls.
