Although Elgin is little more than a railway station, its name is known in many parts of the world.
From here is sent much of the fruit grown in the Western Cape.
Long trains of refrigerated trucks take apples, pears and peaches to Table Bay to be loaded into the insulated and refrigerated holds of waiting ships. During the apple-picking season (January-May) the two great pack-houses near the railways station are scenes of frantic activity and the sweet smell of millions of apples fills the warm Cape air. A continual stream of trucks bring bulk containers of apples to be graded, washed, polished, packed, cooled and loaded, then sent on the first stage of their journey.
Tourists can visit the packhouses, though tours are not arranged during busy periods.
