Killians Pass in Senqu Rural, Eastern Cape
There are two Killian’s Passes in the country, one being located in Namaqualand on the road to Hondeklip Bay, and the other, the one we are describing below, is located n the high mountains between Dordrecht and Barkly East on the R396.
Distance | 1.3 km |

Gradient average | 1:20 |
Gradient maximum | 1:10 |
Summit | 1613 m |
Surface | Gravel / Dirt Track |
Killian’s Pass lies only 2 km south from the tiny hamlet of Rossouw but is not the only Pass along the R396 and should be reviewed together with its sister pass - Greyling's Pass which lies just north of Rossouw.
Despite Killian’s Pass making it onto the list of highest mountain passes in the country it is neither a long Pass nor a difficult Pass to navigate, however, during winter snowfall can cause the road to quickly become muddy and very slippery. A 4X4 is necessary to navigate the Greyling’s Pass so if you do not wish to travel this Pass it is necessary to approach Rossouw from the south and return along the same road when leaving the town.
The southern starting point is where the single lane concrete bridge crosses over the Wasbankspruit River – a beautiful spot to stop and admire the mountains and the clear river waters lined with Willow trees.
