Port Owen lies between the towns of Velddrift and Laaiplek along the West Coast, at the beautiful point where the Berg River meets the Atlantic Ocean. This specific part of the Atlantic Ocean forms the magnificent St Helena Bay which stretches past Shelley Point and as far as Elands Bay.

The area of Port Owen comprises of 100 hectares and has 3.5 km of private waterways running through the estate. Admiral Island is a manmade island in the heart of Port Owen, offering a residential estate with the further enhancement of being surrounded by water and having 24 hour security.

Admiral Island is 21 hectares large with a circumference of 3 km. One side of the Island faces the Berg River with two other sides bound by 2 km’s of private waterways. The residential estate has only 191 plots, of which two thirds are waterfront stands, and there are no commercial zones allocated.

Residents have access to a very calm sea which provides some of the best sailing conditions in South Africa as well as access to the Berg River and its magnificent bird life where sightings of the African Fish Eagle are quite common. The calm seas also allow for most water sports year round, but the Berg River water offers a much warmer swimming temperature than the naturally cold Atlantic Ocean.

Climate

Port Owen receives most of its rain annual rainfall during the winter months.

Summer months, November to March will have average temperatures of between 15˚C and 30˚C.

Winter months, May to August will have average temperatures of between 6˚C and 16˚C.

Transport

There are daily flights into Cape Town International Airport. Port Owen is approximately 160 km away along the R27. Car hire facilities are available at the Airport.

History

The Port Owen marina was started by Owen Wiggens in the late 1970’s and the Island was part of the original development plans. In 1999 a Belgium Consortium from the Owen Wiggens Trust Co Ltd and renamed it Ile Plaisance. The island was once again sold during 2004 to a Development Group and was again named Admiral Island.
